PSAPP "The Camel's Back" (Domino) seven / ten |
The third album from the dynamic duo Carim Clasmann and Galia Durant is entitled The Camel's Back, because it was nearly the straw that broke it. Psapp's increased notoriety in recent years stemmed from the success of their debut album Tiger My Friend, and the follow up The Only Thing I Ever Wanted. Psapp fuse together a quirky yet novel use of electronics, percussion and children's toys with an alluring pop hook that can leave your ears buzzing.
The Camel's Back is an admirable progression from those previous releases as it is delivered with a confidence and maturity that was previously absent. This vibrant pair have honed their abilities and created a pop gem.
Album opener 'I Want That' is an infectious pop flourished treasure with sparsely used electronics that focuses more on a simple yet intelligent lounge sound reminiscent of Soulwax.
'Part like Waves', is by far my favourite; the perfect example of how Psapp have matured, their fresh approach demonstrates the trembling electronic beats and toy keyboards accompanied by a striking orchestration that ebbs and flows in and out of the song with such poignant implications.
The first single 'The Monster Song', is a bit derivative weighed against the other songs on show. The track relies on vocal melodies and awkward electronics to strengthen its tenacity and flair. This aside, the song has the potential to catapult Psapp to a level of popularity that they have never known.
One qualm with the album is that although it is a natural progression for the band, the closing stages of the album are quite lackluster, as Psapp seem to have used up all of their energy in the beginning. There is no real substance left towards the climax and the song 'Screws' is the lowest point, revolving around a piano line lacking in exuberance, while a vocal melody is sang in an uninspiring moan.
However, Psapp are on the right track having already gained recognition from the use of their songs in 'The OC' and 'Nip/Tuck', and composing the main theme tune for 'Greys Anatomy'. They certainly have a few more aces up their sleeves but until then The Camel's Back should tie you over.
