STORY OF HAIR

Story Of Hair could be branded as a quirky, fun, punk, freak-power foursome. Made up of two boys and two girls with lots of hair between them their music harks back to the old formula of days gone by- hit the drums hard, throw in repetitive melodies and batter your guitar with layers of vocal harmony thrown in for good measure.

One can see the appeal in their fun loving music and they no doubt have a following of spritely young things in their wake. Their debut album Cheap Rate is packed with fifteen melodic tracks that blend into each other from start to finish. This writer was however left feeling a little cold after repeated bouts of listening to this album.

On first listening, Cheap Rate has a very familiar sound to it, which isn't a bad thing to say the least; familiarity is good, even if they say it breeds contempt. However, the tracks seem to flow into each other with no real peaks and dips running through the album to tickle your fancy.

The opening track "Friendly Games?" does start the album on a bouncy joyful note, which left me feeling hopeful for the rest of the album. "Steal A Bike" is a pleasant track where you can hear influences from the likes of the Flaming Lips and the same vocal layering as the likes of Polyphonic Spree, while "Technology" is another standout.

Story Hair have a sound that is relevant to today's troops of Irish bands that are working their little old bums off to get recognised. While their debut has some great qualities, I would love to hear them mix it up a little and give a little bit more tempo-wise, as the repetition does wear on you.
