DAN DEACON "Bromst" (Car Park Records)
nine / ten |
Baltimore based electro-super-hero's Dan Deacon's new album Bromst is the record I've been waiting for all my life. Filled with contrapuntal melodies and harmonies, it is a simply an experience rather than just another album.
Bromst features tight clean samples overlapped with strained vocals and deep bass and an intense experience of malleted instruments throughout. It is filled with texture, sounds full, and Deacon succeeds in making this record feel spacious and yet tight at the same time. Bromst focuses on using more live musical samples as opposed to Deacon's earlier work, hence giving the album much more of a live vibe.
Deacon uses a motif of tinkling sounds ascending throughout the record, the kind that are reminiscent of childhood xylophones and ones that work in stark contrast to the live acoustic drums and mallets that he insists on using. 'Padding Ghost' is one of the standouts; it slowly builds from the start and descends into a fast paced electro tune with processed and pitch-manipulated vocals. This record is based on the theme of ghosts and cycles and this neatly ties in with the childish musical element he has incorporated into the album.
Simply put, Bromst is a psychedelic, electro experience not to be missed.
