ADRIAN CROWLEY
"Season Of the Sparks"
(Tim Angel Records)

six / ten

Adrian Crowley's fifth album Season of the Sparks displays a wide variety of stylistic influences that he has adopted in his ten years of playing and collaborating with different artists. Crowley has maintained a quiet success with his low-key folk musings, making friends and fans of people like Ryan Adams, James Yorkston and Steve Albini along the way.

'Season of the Sparks' is a departure from Crowley's previous record, the Choice Music Prize nominated 'Long Distance Summer', and is set to bring his music to a wider audience still. Season of the Sparks is certainly the sort of album that's best appreciated when aligned with a certain mood; nonetheless, it has a determined durability and a unique charm that can only be admired.

Some listeners may describe Crowley as miserable; I did! Nevertheless, Crowley does a pretty good job on his fifth venture. His hushed vocal style and slow paced music is a hybrid of drama and deep melancholy. It's more of an Elliott Smith and Nick Drake affair really. Humour isn't Crowley's specialty, but the sombre tone of the music and Crowley's distinct voice are perfectly matched.
